The Challenge
A packaging manufacturer had a large fire in one of their plants, and to extinguish it quickly to stop it from spreading they used ansulite aqueous film-forming foam concentrate or AFFF. The quick action prevented injury and a larger loss of product; however, the foam contained PFAS, which is still unregulated with no straightforward disposal path. They were left with 40,000 gallons of wet, oily sludge in their containment area, and they were eager to get rid of it.
The Solution
PFAS is known as the “forever chemical,” so incineration is currently the most popular avenue to get rid of it. Envita Solutions reached out to four different companies to get estimates and solutions to deal with the residue. The first three contacts agreed that incineration was the ideal way to eliminate the problem and provided quotes between $100,000 and $300,000. This was a straightforward, popular, and easy solution, but Envita knew that sustainability was important to the customer and wanted to clean the mess and hold their values in high regard. The fourth company Envita connected with had a different solution: the first closed-loop PFAS remediation solution, which was also significantly cheaper. Their process removed and destroyed the chemical in a sustainable and contaminant-free manner, aligning with the customer’s environmental goals.
The Result
By partnering with Envita, our customer received a dedicated Project Manager who found them a solution that fit within their budget, aligned with their values, and dealt with the problem. And when another fire happened not too long after that and the customer as left with another 40,000 gallons of PFAS, they knew Envita Solutions could handle it.
