The Challenge
A global energy technology company had a plant that generated 250 tons of hazardous waste through a line flush process and needed a safe and environmentally friendly way to dispose of it.
The Solution
Envita Solutions evaluated the waste characteristics, the process generating the waste and collected sufficient analytical data to reclassify the waste as a product. This eliminated the material from being reported as hazardous waste and generated a cost savings as material could be shipped in bulk containers rather than IBC totes. Eliminating the cost of IBC totes coupled with less expensive transportation costs provided a $49,000 save to the customer. Additional savings were realized through reduced labor required for loading the totes and the elimination of a potential safety hazard from exposure to chemicals from the tote operation. Through our continuous improvement process, Envita was able to locate an option for reuse of the material as a fuel, eliminating it as a waste all together, thus further reducing customer spend.
The Result
The initiative led to $49,000 in cost savings and successfully diverted 250 tons of material from landfills annually. In addition to these environmental and financial benefits, the customer increased operational safety and promoted creative product reuse.
