Unfortunately, in food and beverage production, recalls happen. Maybe there was accidental contamination, an undeclared allergen, or defective packaging. Whatever the reason for a recall, time is of the essence. They’re unavoidable and raise concerns about the impact on the consumer, the brand, and the bottom line.

Handling a recall involves a complex recovery operation requiring transparency, logistics, compliance, and discretion while protecting the brand. Navigating multiple waste streams, creating the best possible outcome, and identifying opportunities to improve processes without disrupting production is essential. While every little decision can make a difference during a recall, these are staples of effective recall management.

Have A Plan

Every food and beverage manufacturer should have a recall plan that prepares them to implement a rapid, accurate, and transparent response. The plan must include adhering to regulatory compliance for addressing the recall, documenting and destroying the defective product, and returning to standard production. Consider the plan like a fire drill. The team needs to be informed and ready to act in case of a recall, but hopefully, acting on the plan is rarely required.

Speed, Safety, Sustainability

Once a recall occurs, ensure it is addressed quickly, prioritizing the safety of consumers and workers through proper communication, documentation, and remediation, while following environmental compliance. Prioritizing these elements in planning and acting on a recall can help create a more efficient process.  Establishing a team of internal stakeholders and external partners or vendors will support implementing the recall response plan.

Once the recall is complete, assess how the plan was put into practice. Were there opportunities for more transparency or a different type of communication? What steps can be taken to be faster, safer, or more sustainable going forward?

Protect the Brand

The relationship that the customer has with a food and beverage brand is important. If the brand is open, honest, and professional while handling a recall, a consumer is more likely to give them a second chance. Transparency with the customer base includes accurate and thorough information to help protect those who may have been exposed.

Tracing the supply chain, tracking data, providing documentation as required, and working with certified and experienced vendors helps ensure a rapid response. Efficiently managing a recall can help a brand regain or maintain consumer trust.

Have the Right Partner

Consider effective recall management as part of total waste management. Having a total waste management partner means working with an organization that is familiar with your industry, your manufacturing process, and your sustainability goals.  An ideal partner has a wide supplier network that is vetted and proven, has experience with regulatory compliance, and provides innovative solutions to help improve operational efficiency.
