The Challenge
An automotive manufacturer received parts from their supplier packaged in Styrofoam inserts. The package was thrown away after one use, so the company needed a more sustainable way to dispose of this waste.
The Solution
Envita Solutions started with a waste to energy program that transitioned to a recycling program. Focused on continuous improvement, the Envita team determined that reusing packaging not only diverted waste from landfill but also reduced cost. Working with the customer and its parts supplier, Envita developed a system to send empty Styrofoam shells back to the supplier for reuse. By tracking usage, it was determined that the shells could be reused on average 6-8 times before recycling them.
The Result
By gaining a better understanding of the customer’s manufacturing process, the company was able to provide effective upstream solutions that enhanced operational efficiency. This not only streamlined production but also resulted in significant cost savings.
